Joseph,

Alcohol should be fine, or lighter fluid.  Stay away from lacquer thinner.  
Be careful on lenses where the chrome is painted on, not anodized.  This was 
done on some of the chrome lenses from the 60's.  Most notably the DR 
Summicron, Rigid 50 Summicron, 90/4 Collapsible.  The painting is very good 
and can be very hard to tell from anodized.
