But stop signs are indeed digital.  They certainly aren't physical models of a
car stopping, are they?

No, digital means symbolic representation, period.  I've been doing this for
several decades, I know whereof I speak.  In information theory, we do not make
distinctions among letters, numbers, and other symbols.
