I finally got my Nikon back from the shop, and it seems to work correctly now...
and the scans are indeed superb.  Resolution is not that big a deal; it's the
overall quality that counts, and the Nikon scans are superlative.

I haven't tried that.  I just blow some compressed air at the slide before I
scan it.
