It's great to center the trip socket for use on a flash bracket or fix it
onto a tripod without scraping up the base of the camera. But it makes the
camera bigger than I care for to use for out & about shooting without flash.

To me it feels like handling a Leica while *wearing* gloves, making a small 
camera (one of its main attractions to me) into a bigger camera.  Good thing

it's removable so we can all "have it our way" to paraphrase a 
fast-food-chain ad slogan.
