It represented the legality of a contract. It could have also served to replace that contract. Nowadays "getting the name" seems to be the same. You ask them their name and how to spell it and you write it down and no one thinks they are going to get sued back at the paper. That's how it worked at my PJ stints. Mark Rabiner
