Canon just gave the photogs what they wanted, fast AF (USM motors) and a large selection of optics now some with IS, and even eye-controlled focusing. Canon also provided excellent zooms like a 28-70mm F2.8 (Nikon had only the 35-70mm F2.8 to offer with a fixed aperture until very recently), 70-200mm F2.8, et al. They also had features in their lower end cameras that the idiots at Nikon left out even in their high end models. Case in point, the F100 at $1300 does not have mirror lock up, the N90s at about $900 (predecessor to the F100) had no bracketing unless you bought the optional back, while the $450 Canon Elan II had both and also offer eye focus control if you wanted it.
