Dan,

I'm not too surprised.  Rarely have I used a 50mm lens developed since the 70's which performed badly, unless it were dropped before use :-). This includes Olympus, Nikon, Contax and Leica lenses. I'm sure Canon, Pentax and Minolta also have stellar performing 50's.
