For about five years I owned an M3 no. 701243, which is a very early M3
indeed, the 1243ed.  My reputable repairman, Steve, told me that these first
cameras were essentially bench built and the machining etc., superb.  He tells
me the bevel around the viewfinder/range finder housing was done by hand on my
camera.  I am in awe of the workmanship on that camera.  Sadly I sold it one
time when I needed money.
