A lugger wrote that a second hand Leica in the 1960's went for 100 pounds
then he did a bizare calculation to arrive at its present value. I did the
same calculation using the US CPI, a product valued at 100 pounds would be
worth 555.60 pounds in 1999 or in US dollars given a exchange rate of 1.6390
pounds per 1.0 US dollar that would be $910.62. That is more in line with
used prices here in the states. A $2000 camera in 1999 would be worth about
$350 dollars in 1960 not far off the price of a new camera in the 1960's.
Of course a pound in 1960 was worth 2.801 dollars or $280 dollars for a used
Leica in 1960 or $1,555.68 in 1999 dollars.

What can be conclude from this is that a Leica from the 1960 should cost
between $910 to $1,550 US dollars. Most lugger would agree that this is the
average price spread for a M2 or M3. Leica has keeped up with inflation. Of
course the condition of a camera or whether its black paint can increase the
price. Those calculations are a whole different story.

The information came from the Consumer Price Index statistics from
Historical Statistics of the United States (USGPO, 1975). All data since
then are from the annual Statistical Abstracts of the United States.
