Thanks, John, for the reassurance.  Since the atmospheric grime on the
filters is thick enought to be felt as well as seen, do you think a gentle
washing in dish detergent would be the right way to clean them?  I also have
some ROR available, but have never used it.

Just to get things started I use old Leica filters and they compare very
well to anything newer I have. Having said that it depends on what you
intend on using them for. Any filter will increase (or cause) flare in
certain situations. If you are unsure, and the filters are in good
condition, buy new ones and sell me the old ones!
