John,
I agree!
Appreciation of art, whether it be the technique,the viewpoint or the
historical context, is work. Notice, I said appreciation not like or love.
There are many artists whose work I don't particularly like but I can
appreciate the viewpoint and struggle. Many people think all art should
appeal to everyone, quickly and w/o effort. Sort of like appealing to the
lowest common denominator..."if It doesn't match my sofa, I don't like it!"
What a bland world we'd have if this were true. Should all works of
literature be written at a third grade level and avoid any references to
sex, death and other unpleasant topics to make them "accessible" and
inoffensive to everyone that reads them?
If this had been the philosophy in photography 100+ years ago, we'd still be
looking a t landscapes and portraits exclusively. Not that they are bad!
Please note everyone, I'm not including any of you in the above
descriptions.
