I'm still haunted by her picture of herself after she'd been beaten
pretty badly by an abusive boyfriend and the nominal-white of one eye
was bright red from burst blood vessels.  She put on matching bright
red lipstick.  The picture is striking, simultaneously creepy and
beautiful.
