Mike, just wait a little and it might change again and again..
That's why Winogrand left so many undeveloped films. He tried to put some
time between his feelings when he took the pic and the picture itself. Maybe
it helped him to pick the right ones out. Don't know.
Pictures have a 'function'. Time is the test. The more the better.

I've tried to express my own feelings - very similar to yours on
'Reportage' (http://www.reportage.co.uk/):

Like every photographer I've tried to control the process of taking
pictures. Over time however, I've come to the conclusion that it is
uncontrollable. For me there is no such thing as "seeing and shooting straight" or the
"decisive moment". Maybe I'm just not good enough. But I can't explain the
process of taking pictures.
Seldom does my picture capture the full expression of what I see and feel.
In the hope of expressing myself fully I have to do it over and over again.
Sometimes I am dissatisfied with the result but later begin to like the
photograph, sometimes I first like a photograph then discover it doesn't
really 'say' what I mean to convey. The way I look at people is constantly
changing, when I try to take pictures similar to the ones I took the day before -
I fail. Something has changed.
