I just returned last night. Siena is a must. Florence, of course if you
have not been there. Venice, although not in Tuscany, is also a must if you
have not been there -- start with the water bus through the grand canal then
walk your way back through the small streets off the beaten path.

Pick up a copy of Rick Steve's Italy 2000. He has a good section on
Tuscany. He calls it the Hill Country. Weather was hazy every day, with
rain off an on. The dollar is very strong and eating is cheap by US
standards.

All of the people were wonderful in that area, although Florence was a
little more Parisian towards tourists.

The Il Campo in Siena is fantastic, where your widest angles will be used
extensively. Rick Steve's also likes the towns of Orvieta and Civita, for
less touristy places. We also spent 2 nights on the island of Elba, which
was absolutely gorgeous. You go to Piombino and take the ferry to Elba.

exploring the region on my own.

Rapidwinders plus 21-35-50-90 mm lenses and FP4, Tri-X and Velvia film. Like
I usually do, I will bring two photo bags. One big with room for everything
and one small for only two cameras with 35 and 50 mm lenses. Most of the
time I will be using the mini-equipment, as I like to move around without
breaking my back. The price for using the M3:s is that I will have to carry
an extra goggled Summicron 35, maybe a bit silly, but never mind. My M2:s
will be resting at home this time...
