I have a Metz 40 MZ3 I use on a Contax medium format and it works well.
These AF-30 flash units have the module for a specific camera built in
and thus the flash is forever stuck in that particular camera's mode.
The 40 MZ series use the SCA 300/3000 modules so you can switch them
around to different camera makes.

Just yesterday I ordered for $60 the module that will make my flash into
an SF-20 emulator for my M6. I probably won't use it that much because
the flash is bigger than the camera but .... if needed it will be there.

I also noticed that these Metz AF-40 units eliminate the secondary flash
head. I use mine in this mode quite a bit when bouncing the main
light. It gives just enough direct light to the subject to fill in eye
sockets that would be slightly dark in straight bounce mode. It is
switchable off or on.

The SCA 3501 module is available right now for the R8.
