I did the same thing: bought a new-model 50mm Summicron. After 
fighting with the darned thing for a couple of months I realized the 
idiocy of that built-in hood and SOLD the darned thing, replacing it 
with the next-to-recent model (puchased used from Don Chatterton) 
with focus tab and snap-on lens hood. It was an =excellent= decision!
