Hi Gib:

Use the channel mixer. It's in the image:adjust:channel mixer menu. 
Check the monochrome box and use the sliders to get what you like. 
It's easy and fast. You can leave the JPG as RGB and still transmit 
the same size file ass if you sent a greyscale image.
