Walt,
That's contrary to my experience, though they do screw right inside the 
lens rather than having a retaining lip to stay exposed. This can lead to 
them touching the front element.
They are gripped by a serated edge to their top, rather than their sides.
Worth the struggle if you're hard pressed to find or afford the Leica 
alternatives and you find them going cheap.

The Nikon 39mm filters for the long lenses do not fit....
