The R-E was in production at the same time as the R5 and R6, about ten years
ago. The R5 and R6 were 'traditional' Leicas, i.e. very expensive and no
compromise construction; they were around £1,500 body only.

The R-E was an attempt by Leica to produce a 'cheaper' SLR body, albeit
still priced at around £900 but it had a number of plastic parts to keep
costs down; it was often 'bundled' with the 28-70 zoom to give consumers a
cheaper entry point into the Leica system. Still a superb quality camera,
though, but I don't think it was a big sucess due to its' relatively short
life(about five years).
