I found when I pressed my TTL's shutter, with the shutter unwound, that it
still had a significant current draw even though the viewfinder lights did
not come on. Here are the results of tests on my camera:

I think that my camera has a "later" circuit board and that there may well
be several different circuit board versions out there. The best thing is
just to test your own. It is very easy and if you do not have a meter you
could probably get your local mechanic or electronic technician to quickly
check it out. Just remove the battery cover and complete the circuit with a
milli-ammeter.
