I often shoot hand held portrait type shots in low light, close to wide
open (using either a 50 or a 100), and I focus on one of the eyes.  This is
where AF never fails me.   If I were focusing on an elephant, I think I
could do the same, at the appropriate distance.  Next time I am at the zoo,
I will try it.
