I do disagree with that, seriously. I think argument is useful: it clarifies
our own positions, makes us question, makes us defend, sometimes actually
makes us reconsider. People seldom "give in" during the actual argument, but
I think that afterwards they may quietly modify their own positions to take
into account something that impressed them in the arguments of their
opponents. Often, becoming convinced is not a quick, clear thing: it is a
slow, subterranean process.

Of course, you might argue with that. (Man, I can't resist, can I? Once a
smartass....)
