Recently, either the German "FotoMagazin" or "Photodeal" had a story on
that, including an interview with a Leica designer (forgot his name, but
he was a leading figure). 

The basic conclusions were that the Honeywell AF module was a solid
state design, no moving parts, thus more adequate for a portable device
like a camera and cheaper to make. Even at the time the Leica R/SL was a
niche product, the company was financial tight and would hardly have
justified massive r&d investments.

On the other hand the correfot system was successfully marketed for
industrial use, as a measuring device.
