Turn it into a "packing material" thread.  The aluminum legs on my Bogen
are like icicles in the cold, so I wrap a 6-inch segment on each leg
with a 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch thick layer of packing foam (nearly any type
will do, but I like some that gives a little).  Wrap around a layer of 
duct tape to hold it in place.  The foam is a great insulator and it
cushions the grip nicely.
