I have switched to courier type bags with thick fabric. Most luggage
companies have them from $20 to $50. You can buy dividers from the camera
shop to separate your equipment. However, I encase my cameras and lenses
which eliminates the need for the dividers.

For airplane travel, I may opt for a backpack as I have in the past and take
the courier bag with clothing as part of my check through luggage.
