You do not need the diffuser UNLESS you are using a lens wider than
35mm.  I have used the diffuser with my 21mm and it is not bad.  Yes,
the corners are darker but not unacceptable.  I am quite pleased with
this flash.  I have yet to get any red eye, a problem with many small
flash units.
