That's exactly what I do, especially when using manual focus cameras
with no RF or other focusing aid, for example, my Minox 35 GT. Stopping
down 1 stop from that used on the DoF scale seems to give a good safety
margin. It works perfectly for me, as long as I'm able to judge the
distance. Fortunatley, I had plenty of practice doing that using
viewfinder cameras in the 1950s and '60s.
