I used a Nikon Coolscan III, scanned at 2700 dpi, then cropped slightly and reduced to 800x600 pixels.

I've found that with Velvia and Provia transparencies, I have to play with the analog gain to maximise the dynamic range captured. Scanning at the default setting often results in great loss of shadow details. The scan of the mallard picture isn't great either, as the details of the feathers behind the head are lost. The 8-bit range is woefully inadequate, and I'm now very interested in the new Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED with an uncut 35mm roll film adaptor.
