Personally I take manufacturers' claims about Dmax with a pinch of salt.
According to the spec sheets, Nikon's LS2000 has a better Dmax than
Polaroid's SS4000, but a direct comparison of the two doesn't seem to
support this. The best advice is to go to a specialist dealer who will let
you try the models you're interested in on your own negs and trannies.

IMHO the best resource on filmscanners is the mailing list run by Tony Sleep
- - details at http://www.halftone.co.uk and follow the filmscanners link.
It's a high traffic list, but it's well worth reading.

As for software, I use Vuescan - from http://www.hamrick.com - with my
Polaroid SS4000. It is somewhat lacking in the user interface dept. but it
produces *terrific* results.
