My understanding is that Leica make batches of equipment that are stored and
then units are taken for distribution.  I do not believe they take these
boxes in manufacture or numerical order so you may get newly manufactured
equipment in a store or two year old equipment - still new but only just
distributed.  Of course, Leica cameras are not FMCG products so they may be
in the store for a few months also.  This only becomes an issue if there
have been design modifications and you would therefore want to buy the
latest version.  Has the R8 had such design mods in its five year life?
