This may be one of the most compelling questions I've ever seen posted to
the LUG. Paul, here's what I would do:

- - Ditch the flash; use faster film if necessary.
- - Meter off the animal's fur and...
- - Bracket! Shoot at -1, -1 1/2 and -2 stops from the meter reading.

I'll bet that -2 stops will give the best exposure, since that would be
good ol' zone three - the darkest shadow area in which detail will be shown.
