I can't remember what book I saw this in, but it gave this advice on
diffraction for critical use:

To limit diffraction, use stop no smaller than focal length divided by 4.

examples:  20 mm @ f/4.5,  50 mm @ f/11,  100 mm @ f/22,  200 mm @ f/45.

I've never done any tests, but there it is, FWIW.
