It usually happens when I swap from slide film to negative film, or when I
have scanned a very dark slide with analog gain turned on, and then try to
scan a rather light slide. I use the slide holder for both slides and
negatives (in the frame carrier).

You shouldn't need to reboot your system. Just invoke My Computer /
Properties / Device Manager, and refresh the SCSI controller after you turn
the scanner back on.
