When in Vienna, Austria last year, I shot enormous quantities of
churches, both exteriors and interiors.  The lens I ultimately used the
most was the Cosina Skopar 25/4.0, shooting Provia 100F @ 1 second for
almost all shots, with a tabletop tripod.

Usually, there were no problem taking photos when the church was empty,
but several times I was asked to refrain from shooting if there was
anyone in attendance.  I guess you just need to find out what the
expectations are of the prospective audience before shooting.

Either way.... don't shoot a photo of an empty sanctuary....  the Church
isn't a building.
