One thing that I do that's odd is to only shoot 30 or so frames off the roll.

This is because I find that when I get schmootz on the film, it's always
because something dried on the last 4 or 5 frames. I also do this because every
once in a while, I'll load a roll of film wrong and cut off the last few
frames. I'd rather shoot short rolls than risk having nice pictures ruined. :)

I agree with all the other advice given here. And, I'd say, if you are just
getting started, Tri-X and D76 1:1 is the best way to do it. I still shoot use
this combo the most.
