Would an early, but well-sorted-out, Leica R camera be worth considering?
 An R4 or, particularly, an R3, with, say, an older 50mm Summicron in
good condition? Not particularly expensive (particularly the R3); not too
much automation (here again, particularly the R3) but still enough to
have the feel of a "modern" camera; a platform for some fine optics
(might as well get a head start with this) that, if picked out with care,
won't be humongously expensive either. By no means a pocket camera, of
course, and therefore perhaps too heavy/clunky for a child. But maybe not.

Just a possibility . . .
