Roy,
i think the SF20 coverage range with diffuser on is 28mm.
if i not mistaken that you want to shoot at a longer range (distance to
object), why don't you try to set the flash manually?  why do you try to use
the ND filter ?

using the same materials for shooting  the whole project really might help;
but then nowadays any version of Photoshop can provide your pictures with a
<consistent look>. Except, of course, if you feel that <you can manipulate
nothing>.
