Subject: [Leica] Leica Users archives: search and index are working again

Longtime LUG readers will have noted that the stability of the archives
has been slowly decreasing.

The reason for this was that as time goes by, the archives get bigger
and bigger. Each time a new batch of messages arrives to be added to the
archives, the software has had to scan the entire archive in order to
index the new content.

To make it work again, and to give it a good chance of continuing to
work for several more years without me having to pay attention to it, I
have split the search into two parts. You can search the current volume,
or you can search back issues. Previously, all searches searched
everything, current and past, which meant that all archive updates had
to rebuild the index for everything.

Now I just have to rebuild the index for the back issues when a volume
is closed and the volume number is incremented, which happens just 2 or
3 times a year.

So: please enjoy the resurrection of the Leica Users search and index
mechanism. As always, it's at http://mejac.palo-alto.ca.us/leica-users/
