Rechargable NiCad and NiMH batteries both have high "self discharge rates".
NiMH are usually worse than NiCads in this respect although they have higher
energy densities. You can do a search on the web if you are interested in
this. So your problem may have nothing to do with your R8.

If this is a problem for you, you can always use non rechargeable alkalines
or the nominal 1.5V AA lithiums. The lithiums are quite expensive (although
they are often available on sale) but they have a very high energy density,
a very low self discharge rate (10 year shelf life), are about 2/3 the
weight of alkalines, don't leak, and work well in the cold.
