I've been carrying my cameras as carry on luggage without any problem.
Airport security isn't all that much different than before.  You just have
to show I.D. more often and leave the swiss army knife at home.  And, oh
yeah.  Security is less inclined to hand check your bag.  I haven't
personally noticed any fogged film from carry on x-ray, but YMMV of course.
