Subject: [Leica] 90 SU serial number oddity

I just bought a 90 Summicron-M. It is a very early version of the small
pre-APO model (the design where the retracted lens shade covers the
aperture ring), which I thought was introduced in 1980. However the
serial number (281xxxxx) belongs, according to the Sartorious list I've
seen, to 1977. Was this such a low-production lens that it took 3 years
to use up a serial number block? Or what?

It is a lovely lens. Laney book lists it as 410g, but I weighed mine at
475g, just like the later barrel design.
