Subject: [Leica] partially OT: Scanner resolution question

this is to some of you guys who really know scanners.

i have a minolta damage scanner.

i notice that you can define the pixels you want and also the size that
you want and the machine figures out the scanning res. for example, i like
to scan in 6x6 full frame into 2000x2000 pixel images, or 35mm
into 2400x1600, and in PS reduce by 4 for the web. when i do this, the
resolution is some funny number like 923dpi or something.

only this morning did i stop and think about it; the machine can't
REALLY continuously change its input resolution, can it? thus,
isn't it interpolating?

am i better off using the highest-res setting and using
PS to bicubic the thing down (by non integral factor) to the size i need?

or does it make any difference?
