One issue is it uses LEDs for a light source, and that is a point light
source. Because of this scratches and dust show up more so than with normal
diffuse lighting...which is why Digital Ice is more or less necessary for
the Nikon, and not so for other scanners without point source lighting.

Second issue is banding. The Nikon uses a tri-linear sensor (three parallel
sensors) and therefore scans three lines at one time...since the LEDs change
color, there are no color filters over the CCD. Well, they made a mistake
in their firmware/hardware design, and they only calibrate one of the three
CCD rows, and apply that single calibration to all three rows. Needless to
say, it results in banding. This can be worked around by scanning with one
CCD row.

I have also heard of DOF problems with this scanner...it apparently has a
very shallow DOF, and requires the negative to be very coplanar to the CCD,
as well as very flat.

I'm sure it's a fine scanner, but it does apparently have some problems.
