Tell him you'll need to borrow his for a few weeks first. Don't jump into

$300 will get you an average P&S zoom from almost any company sorry to say.
The Can*n sure shot Classic got some good points in a Popular Photo a few
months back... My only real recommendation would be a Leica Minilux Zoom or
the Contax TVS, I know thatıs no help... I've always been interested in the
Rollei's as another post suggested...
