Sort of like automatically dodging the corners of your picture. The reason BTL shutters work so well is that the good ones are exactly at the focal axis (or whatever it is called) where the rays cross, and the diaphragm is. There are leaf shutters that operate outside the lens, but they also produce artifacts from this very arrangement.
