First consideration might be given on topic to the Leitz Tiltall.
They were black. Then made in silver by the English. 
Now they are perhaps made in Taiwan.

but it's my understanding that all versions are quite viable.

They made be the best deal in tripods out there. New or used. Any version.

I love my Gitzos but am now using like crazy a Ries J 100 wood tripod!
It has revolutionized my tripod use.
I plan to do a "write-up" on it.
