I had though until your comment that the week 2 alternate was my best scan yet wehn it comes to tonality and contrast. I think the comment was on my week two alternate. http://home.istar.ca/~robsteve/photography/PAW2001/wk2alt.htm I find a lot of the PAW pictures are just too high in contrast. Some of the participants are making the contrast too high just to achieve a level of black they prefer. In the process, they blow out the detail in the highlights. In the picture above, Gordon was wearing a blue and red rugby shirt. If I made it more contrasty, the blue parts of the shirt would have gone black. The full range of tones are in the picture from the black of his eyes to the white in the collar of his shirt. B&W is just like colour film; some people like the surreal saturation of Velvia, others like the realistic saturation of Kodachrome. I tend to like the middle ground, with my favorite being Provia 100f these days. This is probably reflected in my B&W tonality as well. BTW, for the main image, I actually brought the contrast and brightness up a bit because I though it may be more in the style of the other PAW posters.
