Keep working on getting closer to your subject. Engage with them or have their actions tell a story as the lead image does. As to the lead image, I suspect if you had waited you could have caught the "clown" giving the balloons to the group which would have allowed a composition bringing the two sides together rather than showing it as two sides with a division down the middle.
