Ansel Adams was the keynote speaker at the 1970 conference of Photographic
Scientists and Engineers, and I was impressed by his knowledge of chemistry.
While emphasizing the artistic side of photography, Adams spoke with
authority before a formidable audience of experts. He surprised me with his
understanding of the underlying substrates, halides and sensitization dyes
of his chosen medium. Getting to meet him briefly afterwards was a special
treat. Some years later, the only other "famous" person I every met was
Linus Pauling when I presented my old "College Chemistry" book, which he
signed graciously with a bemused smile. Afterwards, I remember thinking what
an interesting discussion Adams and Pauling might have made together.
