Quality (and convenience) and cost.

I can't get quality negatives from the one hour places I've tried around
here.  Very minute scratches that don't print...but that are picked up when
scanning at 4000 dpi.  You can see them with a loupe on the original when
you look for them.  There aren't any good pro labs that are close by.  So
it's also more convenient to do them myself.  I'd rather be developing than
spending time on the roads in rush hour.  :)

The next is cost.  Why would I want to pay close to 20 times more for less
quality?  I can develop them myself for 10 cents a roll.

But that's more of a justification than a reason.  If I got better quality
doing it myself at home, it was really inconvenient, and it cost more, I'd
still do it myself at home for the quality.
